Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook.
In this program -- a conversation with Newt Gingrich, a former college history professor, accomplished author, staunch conservative and member of Congress for more than 20 years.
He's best known as Speaker of the House from 19-95 to 19-99, where he lead the "Republican Revolution" -- which helped his party re-gain Congress after 40-years of democratic majorities.
He was the chief architect of the GOP's "Contract with America."
During his tenure as Speaker he represented the public face of the Republican opposition to President Bill Clinton.
Amid poor electoral results in 98, and criticism of his ethics and personal life Gingrich resigned his position and House seat.
Gingrich, now 62, remains involved in public policy debate especially on the issue of health care.
He was the keynote speaker at an April health care leadership forum in Bedford -- where he spoke about using technology to improve and make health care more efficient.
Gingrich has been spending a lot of time in New Hampshire and Iowa, and not suprisingly his name has been mentioned as a potential 2008 Republican nominee for President.

Newt Gingrich is here with me in-studio to discuss health care, the prospects of Republicans losing their MAJORITY status in Congress, Iraq, the 2008 Presidential election.and more.
Welcome.
Q This is your 2nd trip to NH this year -which of course fuels SPECULATION about a potential White House bid. Will you run for for Pres in 2008?
** Under what circumstances would you run? Why So COY?
Q Some say You are TOO "POLARIZING a figure to WIN in a general election? Are you?
Q Speaking of Hillary You raised some eyebrows in 2005 when you announced a collaboration with her on a new health care bill. Do You and Senator Clinton now share a COMMON VIEW of a 21st century health care system???
Q MA Gov Mitt Romney is signing into a law a new universal health care bill.
It's being touted as a national model. Are you familiar w/it? Is it a viable model for nation?
Q Why have you taken on the issue of Health care?
=====================================
BETH: You were here in October --where you spoke to lawmakers at the State House about your latest book "Winning the Future: a 21st century contract with America" -- in which you outline the need for change.
=================================
Q The "Contract with America" called for Term Limits – that few observed except for perhaps House Speakers – their tenures- on average – have been shorter than most.
The contract also called for ACCOUNTABILITY.
We Now have Former house boss Tom DELAY indicted, Jack ABRAMOFF going to prison, lobbyists still swarming over capital hill. What happened to your REVOLUTION?
Q It's been a DOZEN years since you engineered your party's TAKE-OVER of Congress.
Is the Republican party in DANGER of LOSING it's MAJORITY status in the House???
** DO democrats have a unified message
*Some democrats speak of a tidal wave similiar to the one in 19-94 when GOP picked up a stunning 53 seats. They only need 15 to win back the House?
Will HISTORY REPEAT itself?
Q Is there an ANTI-REPUBLICAN tide sweeping the country? A public clamor for change?
Q Pres Bush's approval ratings continue to slide. Even on the Security front which was his strong suit. What impact will that have on the Congressional elections?
IMMIGRATION
BETH: As Congress deals with immigration reform bills protests have erupted all over the country, including here in New Hampshire.
Q What are the facts of the case – and how would you solve the illegal immigration problem?
Q You would solve the illegal immigration problem by targeting the businesses that hire them? Wasn’t the Immigration Overhaul of 1986 supposed to make it illegal to hire undocumented workers –Why have we seen numbers TRIPLE? Enforcement – clearly an issue.
Q You talk about so called SMART cards for temporary workers.
How would they be used – and iare you viewing it ONLY as an ENFORCEMENT mechanism?
Q The big question: Should they stay or should they go? You say illegal residents should be sent home before applying for temp workers permit. Is that practical? If we don’t know who they are – where they are --how does that happen?
Q The nation is certainly divided on the issue of IMMIGRATION.
Will the Politics of Immigration be a DEFINING issue in 2008?
Q Since 9/11 controlling who comes into the country – has become a security issue.Americans are united on that front. How does the US get absolute control over its borders. I
THE WAR ON TERRORISM -- US Troops in Iraq are certainly defining issues.
Q A recent Zogby Poll shows 72% support US troop withdrawal from Iraq within the next year.
1 in 4 say the military should leave immediately. What do YOU say????
What about Those who say we should stay until the job is done?
What are your feelings about the Bush Adminstrations invasion of Iraq?
You’re quoted as saying: It was an enormous mistake for us to try to occupy that country after June of 2003. Are you among those calling for Def Sec Donald Rumsfeld to resign? Those who say we should stay until the job is done?
Q When asked if there should be a specific timetable of withdrawal of American troops? John Kerry said No. Back in Oct called for the withdrawal of 20,000 troops from Iraq by year's end as the first step.
** How do you feel about your position being left of John Kerry's
IRAN
Iran says its joined the Nuclear Countries of the world. Their announcement comes amid talk in Washington of a possible military strike against Iran. Has Tehran actually taken a step which opens the way to a nuclear bomb? …How worried she would be??? The rhetoric sounds like 2 countries moving toward confrontation
** You’re QUOTED as saying the favored solution is to change the ruling regime in Iran.
How do you propose we do that? Aren’t we doing that in Iraq? And from your perspective unsuccessfully.
You’re quoted as saying: "Just to take out the facilities is a losing game. When they develop atomic weapons, they will sell them to somebody, and that will be dangerous,

PBS
Q Self-interested Question. Back in the 90's you wanted to eliminate ANY federal funding to
public Televisiion. Seeing first hand the value of Public broadcasting in NH and forums like this program provides - Have you seen the light ???
Do we make a difference????

Several newspapers recently published editorials and opinion pieces on a bill passed last week by the Massachusetts Legislature that would require all uninsured state residents to purchase health insurance by July 1, 2007, and require employers in the state with 11 or more employees to provide coverage for workers. Summaries appear below.
If election held today, republicans would probably lose 15 seats they need to keep control of the house. & could come within a seat or two of losing senate
Gingrich told Time.his party has so bunbled the job of governing that the best campaign slogan for democrats today could be boiled down to 2 words Had enuf??
Is an anti republican wave building.
Recent polls show
a generic Democrat getting 50% of the vote to a generic republican 41%.
Few strategists believe dem takeover of senate likely.
Good news for republicans elections are still 7 mo.'s away
Positive developments in Iraq or in the capture of Osama bin Laden could sweeten nations mood
Gingrich: Rep badly need accomplishments to tell voters about.
"the country actually expects the majority to implement - they hire you to govern, not just to tell them why you are right.
can you battle national tide by localizing individual races.
Democrats are seen as lacking a clear agenda.

here in NH.
Protestors who gathered at St Paul's Church in Concord among those who say they are fighting for the Amercian Dream.
They're urging lawmakers to allow an estimated 11-million illegal immigrants to settle in the US legally.
The question of who gets to be an American is a divisive one.
